Canon Treasurer Mark Bonney and Chris Simpson, the Head Verger, recently met with the experts in the Needlework Studio at The Royal School of Needlework, Hampton Court, which has been caring for several of our most precious and most vulnerable vestments and frontals for some time. Canon Bonney reports: “Among these is the Te Deum frontal designed by Sidney Parry in the 19th Century, and embroidered by two local Salisbury embroiderers, Jane Weigall and her daughter. The Frontal is generally in good condition; a good percentage of the embroidery remains sound and the colours remain fresh and bright with minimal fading. There are however specific areas of damage and a range of issues which need to be addressed in order to preserve the frontal for the future”.
The Friends have agreed to allocate £20,000 towards the cost of renovating this piece of needlework. The Te Deum Frontal is of extremely high quality, and we are delighted to be involved in repairing one of the Cathedral’s most precious possessions, so that it can be used in the service of the Cathedral’s liturgy and general adornment in the future.
