The Executive Council of the Friends of Salisbury Cathedral agreed to make a grant to Chapter to provide new external floodlighting, to replace the existing which had been in place since 1973. This followed an earlier grant to design and install a new internal lighting system.
The official “switch-on” of the new Cathedral lighting system took place on Tuesday 12th February 2008. As dusk settled into an extremely cold and blustery early evening, members of the Friends’ Executive Council joined the design team and those involved in the creation and construction of the up-to-date, new, efficient lighting system, to see the range of internal lighting which showed the beautifully highlighted vaulted interior. We then braved the cold evening to view the external lighting, which showed the superb sharpness and warm colour of the exterior in all its glory – a very visual and lasting testimony of the generous contribution the Friends have made to funding this project. The new lighting uses low wattage metal halide sources, and will cost considerably less to run than the existing lighting.
To all our “Friends” reading this – a great big “thank you” for making our funding of this project possible. Now, when you see our Cathedral so beautifully lit you will know that your efforts made it all possible.
