In 2008, the 750th Anniversary year of the Cathedral’s consecration, the Friends of Salisbury Cathedral were delighted to support the recently commissioned statue of Canon Ezra, now positioned on the Cathedral’s West Front to the right of Bishop Odo of Ramsbury.
Born in 1917, Canon Ezra was a well-known priest, biblical scholar and translator. In March 1991 he was caught in the crossfire of fierce fighting between government forces and the Sudan People’ s Liberation Army just outside Rokom and was killed by an artillery shell.
Using the two photographs as a starting point, the sculptor Jason Battle created drawings to decide upon the most appropriate dress, attitude and attributes. Next he made a ¼ size maquette from clay to show Chapter how the statue would look. He then made a full size head and a ½ size maquette. When all was agreed that this was the correct model for the statue, he made a cast of it in plaster, which is what you see in the window of the Friends’ Office. He has used this as his point of reference, working straight onto the block of stone.
The statue was unveiled on the 12th July 2008 and the Friends paid £25,000 towards the cost.
