I greatly enjoyed our pilgrimage to Iona, but as I said in the newsletter, at the same time feeling terribly sorry that poor Jane could not go. The weather was mostly blustery and unsettled, but we did have one glorious day when the group did a variety of things. Some of us took the boat to Staffa and Fingal’s Cave, and heard Jeremy Davies sing in the cave – it was a perfect day – until we got home and heard that a force 9 gale was forecast for overnight Friday and Saturday, and the rumour that the Iona to Mull ferry might not run. After much consternation and discussion, the decision to leave on Friday was made, and I luckily found accommodation for everyone in the same hotel in Oban overnight. We left Oban on Saturday morning, and caught the flight back to Southampton without any mishap after all. The cost involved was covered by the small percentage we added on to the cost of travel, for use in such a case. Anthony and Kate Weale, our editors of Spire, are putting together a report about the trip in the annual report, so we look forward to that.
