What Friends do

The Friends regularly make grants to the Cathedral towards its upkeep. Grants in the recent past include repairs to the Eastern Chapel roof, restoration of the Cloisters, new boilers for the heating, a new sound system and a loop system for those with impaired hearing, and 1800 new chairs.

Their latest, and largest, grant has been £361,000 towards the cost of designing and installing a new lighting system. This has involved replacing some 26 kilometres of electric cabling, as well as the installation of the new lighting system inside the building.

A full list of grants made since the foundation of the Friends may be seen by clicking here. Grants total well over £2 million, and that does not allow for inflation.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication and generosity of the members. The Friends are funded through subscriptions, donations and bequests; and income from investments. But if the Friends are to be able to continue to help the Cathedral, they must find new members.

A Friend can do more than just pay a subscription. A welcome is offered to anyone who wishes to give their time or talents, expertise or interest towards furthering the work of the Cathedral.

Why not join the Friends now, and make sure that the Cathedral – a major place of worship and an international icon – is preserved for future generations?
